Our paper describing the HiFi + Hi-C genome the cotton boll weevil, "Insight into weevil biology from a reference quality genome of the boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)" is available online at G3 Genes|Genomes|Genetics https://doi.org/10.1093/g3journal/jkac309! November 11 Big couple of weeks for tamarisk beetle research led by collaborator Eliza Clark at Colorado State University! Two papers digging into Diorhabda evolution were just published, "Evolution of reproductive life-history and dispersal traits during the range expansion of a biological control agent" at Evolutionary Applications (https://doi.org/10.1111/eva.13502), and "Fitness and host use remain stable in a biological control agent after many years of hybridization" at Biological Control (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.biocontrol.2022.105102). October 7 Just posted our Genome Report describing the new Ag100Pest and RefSeq annotated genome of Pectinophora gossypiella, available as a preprint here https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.10.07.511331v1 with annotations at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genome/annotation_euk/Pectinophora_gossypiella/100/ Another important global pest with potential to develop insecticide resistance. September 15 Big news! This October I'm joining RiversEdge West https://riversedgewest.org as their first ever Staff Scientist. I’ll be linking research to solutions for riparian restoration of the southwest, especially in biocontrol, invasive plants, and species of conservation concern. August 16 Our Genome Report describing the new RefSeq genome of Helicoverpa zea, a male from the Bt resistant strain, HzStark_Cry1AcR is available online as an accepted manuscript with GBE at https://doi.org/10.1093/gbe/evac131! We used our polishCLR pipeline (github.com/isugifNF/polishCLR) to generate this high-quality genome from CLR and Illumina reads. February 14 With co-lead Jennifer Chang and others on the Ag100Pest Assembly Team, we've just posted a pre-print for polishclr, a Nextflow workflow for polishing PacBio CLR genome assemblies. This is the first product of my ARS post-doc, and has already been used on several arthropod genomes, including Helicoverpa zea. Check out the github release here: github.com/isugifNF/polishCLR January 21, 2022 Just wrapped up a wonderful experience as a Guest Lecturer with Dr. Zeynep Ozsoy at Colorado Mesa University in a J-Term course on Genome Annotation, using curriculum fro the Genomics Education Partnership (GEP). Next up, I'm working on building a new GEP scientific project with the Ag100Pest genomes, starting with diapause-related genes in Diorhabda. December 8 I was honored to give a talk on the Tasmanian Devils for the annual Colorado Mesa University BIOSINQ fundraiser and mixer last night! You can donate to support Undergraduate Research Experiences at CMU (like the one that kicked off my career) at: www.supportingcmu.com/mavfunder?cfpage=/o/colorado-mesa-university-foundation-53/i/mavfunder/s/biosinq-mixer-match-2021 November 16 "Hybridization and range expansion in tamarisk beetles (Diorhabda spp.) introduced to North America for classical biological control" has been accepted and is in press at Evolutionary Applications! You can read the accepted version here: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/eva.13325 . The first D. carinulata reference genome we developed for this work is also publicly available on NCBI: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/assembly/GCA_020975425.1/
